CAR WASH RECYCLE SYSTEM



Huge amount of fresh water is used for washing automobiles. On an average each vehicle requires 200 to 800 lit of water per wash depending on type of vehicle (like car, jeep, truck etc.), car wash station facility (automatic or manual) and washing practice. All the water used for washing goes to the drain. The water consumption of various types of vehicles is,

 

2 Wheelers

: 150 - 200 lit.

3 wheelers

: 250 - 300 lit.

4 wheelers (Cars)

: 400 - 600 lit.

Trucks & Buses

: 700 - 800 lit.

 

Waste water contains impurities such as Suspended Solids, organic matter, detergents, Oil & Grease, etc. waste water ultimately reaches to surface water or underground water reservoirs and pollutes them, if not treated prior to discharge. 

 

The quality of wastewater generated is as follows:

Presently, no treatment is being given in automobile service stations / petrol pumps.
In this UF based vehicle wash recycle system, the wastewater is treated to recycled level that water and detergent can be reused for washing. This helps in reducing about 70% – 75% requirement of fresh water bill. In metro cities where cost of water is as high as 30 – 40 Rs/m3, this is a substantial saving.

 

Advantages of using UF in Vehicle Wash Recycling system: 

1. High surface area of the membranes means superior filtration occupying lesser space

2. Easy capacity add on because of modular design

3. It can handle variations in feed water without affecting the treated water quality (for eg. during monsoons or when washing a bus/some other     heavy vehicle)

4. It is an automated process, with micro-processor control. This reduces the manpower and chemical requirement, thus reducing the                 operating cost.

TREATMENT

Indus Ecowater has developed the vehicle wash recycle system combining advanced oxidation and membrane filtration methods.  This wastewater treatment system removes the impurities that prevent the wash water from re-use. 

 

Impurities in automobile wash water:

- Suspended solids / mud / dust

- Oil & Grease

- Trace solvents / fuels

- Detergent (that was used for washing)

 

If we can remove the above impurities from wastewater, we can re-use the water. This is achieved in the following steps:

 

Suspended solids / mud / dust: Suspended solids are physical impurities. By nature they are heavier than water and will settle when velocity is reduced and time is given for settling. These are removed using simple physical methods. The collection tank contains 3 chambers. The first chamber is meant for settling of suspended solids. A poly-electrolyte / coagulant is is added with a dosing pump to enhance settling rate. 70% to 80% of solids are removed by settling. 

The remaining solids are removed using the Dual media filter & Ultra Filtration system. Ultra Filtration system removes physical particles bigger than 100 microns making it suitable for re-use.

 

Oil & Grease: Oil & grease is a physical impurity and is removed using simple physical methods. The collection tank is designed in such way that oil floats on water and is removed using a oil skimmer. A proprietary chemical is added with a dosing pump to enhance oil floating. Oil free water goes for next stage of process. 95% to 98% of oil is removed in this process.

The remaining 2% to 5% oil is removed using adsorption properties of Activated Carbon Filter.

 

Trace Solvents / Fuels / Additives: Wastewater contains trace quantities of solvents / fuels / fuels additives that come from spillages and washings. These are removed with aeration. Fine bubble diffused aeration is provided in the collection tank to strip out solvents / fuels etc. This process will also prevent septic conditions from developing in collection tank and reduce COD / BOD to some extent.

 

Detergent: The detergent present in wastewater is NOT removed in this process. The detergent quantity required for washing with this water is 50% less than the original quantity. The quantity of detergent is reduced by the action of Ozone. Ozone is a strong oxydizing  agent will reduce the detergent / COD in treated water making it fit for re-use.

However the final rinse of the automobile must be always done with fresh water.

 

PROCESS FLOW

The wash water from the service station is collected in the collection/settling sump (civil construction). The suggested minimum capacity of the sump is 10,000 lts.

The collection tank / sump will have a special design. It consists of 3 compartments incorporating inclined plates. These plates help to reduce the suspended solids and free floating oil from the wash wastewater. We will provide the civil tank design.

The sludge collected can be disposed of by means of submersible pump and collected in a holding pit, from where it can be disposed off. The free-floating oil is collected in an Oil Collection Tank using an oil skimmer

The wash water from collection/settling sump is then pumped through a Multi-grade sand filter, activated carbon filter and an Ultra-Filtration (UF) unit to remove the suspended solids and emulsified oil. The UF also removes bacteria and viruses from the wastewater along with suspended solids. UF treated water will be clear and smell free.

Permeate i.e. the treated water from the UF unit is colorless and odorless and is suitable for Vehicle washing. Process has been designed not to remove the soap and detergent from the wastewater. This helps in reducing the soap and detergent requirement.

Major equipments of the system are:

 

1) TILTED PLATE INTERCEPTOR (TPI)

 

TPI system is the ideal method for removing suspended solids and free oil from Vehicle wash water. The plate pack (constructed of SS, RP, etc, depending upon the application) is installed in the collection tank (made of RCC).

 

The wash water flows into the plate pack. The plate pack is constructed of closely spaced corrugated plates inclined at a 45º angle or more. Wash water flows through these plates either parallel to the corrugations in “Counter-current flow” or at right angles to the corrugations in “Cross Flow”. Here the oil droplets and suspended solid particles are intercepted.

 

Suspended solids loose their velocity and settle down. The settled solids will be pumped by a submersible pump and taken to a collection pit. The sludge can then be suitably disposed off.

 

The oil particles coalesce into large droplets as perfect laminar conditions are created and maintained throughout. In the case of counter-current, the droplets leave the pack rapidly, subsequently flowing upwards against the liquid flow to the surface. This oil is the removed through a skimmer pipe.

 

2) DUAL MEDIA FILTER

 

New generation FRP DUAL MEDIA filter is used to reduce the suspended solids present in the raw water. The filter will effectively remove the suspended solids to less than 5 Mg/L. The filter has to be backwashed for 10 to 15 minutes daily for removing accumulated solids. An automatic multiport valve is provided to send the filter into backwash mode after the flow of desired water volume. A flow sensor is incorporated in the line to measure the flow of water.

 

3) ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER

 

Activated Carbon filter is used to remove trace quantity of oil & grease. It will also adsorb organics and make the water suitable for re-use. The filter has to be backwashed for 10 to 15 minutes daily for removing accumulated solids. An automatic multiport valve is provided to send the filter into backwash mode after the flow of desired water volume. 

 

4) ULTRAFILTRATION (UF)

 

Ultra-filtration is a low-pressure membrane process in which, feed water flows from the inside of the fibers, permeates through the membrane and is removed as the product from the shell side.

 

UF is the most effective technology available to remove suspended solids, turbidity, emulsified oil, colloidal matter, bacteria’s, viruses, proteins, and other impurities within its range. In this case we have offered this as a polishing unit, which will remove the suspended particles, bacteria’s, viruses and emulsified oil.

 

Membrane Filters offers a positive physical barrier between the feed contaminants and the product water. When the feed water changes (for example, high silt during heavy rains) the product water off the membrane filter remains the same. Also since the membrane filtration is a physical separation process, there are no chemical additives, polymers, flocculation tests or sludge disposal problems. 

 

5) OZONATION

 

Ozone is generated on site using ozone generator. Two oxygen molecules combine to give one molecule of ozone and one molecule of nascent oxygen. Ozone is highly reactive and oxidizes organic matter present in wastewater. This system will reduce organics present in water to make it suitable for re-use.
